Bat Guano in Attic

Histoplasmosis is found in soil, often linked to decaying bat guano or bird droppings. The disruption from excavation, construction or ventilation systems can release these toxic elements, which are then inhaled and settle into the lungs. This disease affects primarily the lungs but occasionally can infect other organs; this is called disseminated histoplasmosis, and it can be fatal if left untreated.

If symptoms of histoplasmosis infection occur, they will start within 3 to 17 days after exposure; the average is 12–14 days. Most affected individuals do not show any signs or ill effects. The active phase of histoplasmosis is characterized by non-specific respiratory symptoms, often cough or flu like symptoms. Chronic histoplasmosis can resemble tuberculosis.
